Genetic Testing

This afternoon, I had my first round of genetic testing.  It is alarming to see how much my risks of having a baby with chromosomal abnormalities has increased since I was pregnant with Megan.
The appointment started with a meeting with a genetic counselor who explained what our current risk factor was (about 1 in 300) and what our genetic testing options were (the NT ScanAmniocentesis or CVS, or a combination, or nothing).  Right now younger old mothers (35 to 37) are encouraged to start with the NT scan if they opt for testing.  Unlike an amnio, it doesn't have any risk of miscarriage and the results are accurate enough to allow many women to skip an amnio entirely.
I still have to wait for my blood work to come back, but the results from the ultrasound were good. The little jellybean does not have fat neck; it measured 1.9 mm (<3mm is considered normal.)

So for right now, it doesn't look like we will have to worry about chromosomal abnormalities.
