Six And A Half

Did you know that today was Megan's half birthday? If you didn't, then you probably haven't spoken to her in the last two weeks.

According to Megan, on your half-birthday you get a cake. And you get a special lunch. And you get a card. And you get to tell everyone it is your half-birthday. And now you aren't just 6, you are 6½.

For her special lunch, Megan desperately wanted a Lunchable. Which is something I generally refuse to buy, because I think they are pretty gross. But since it was obviously important to her, I made an exception.

After the feast yesterday, I bundled all three kids in the car and we went to the grocery store to pick on out. I rejected her first three choices, since they all contained candy as the Dessert. We finally settled on one with ham and cheese. I tried to convince her that we could make the same lunch at home, but she didn't believe me.

That evening, as I was packing her lunch, she can up and whispered in my ear that she also wanted a card in her lunch bag. I told her that I would be happy to put a card in her bag. And then she further specified, still in a whisper, that she wanted the card to be in the shape of something, like a heart, or a flower, or a birthday cake. When I stopped by my place at the table a few minutes later, I found this:

Dear Mom, I love you. Here are some shapes you can make my card for my half birthday. Love, Megan
When I was helping Megan put on her PJs, she asked if I found the note for her. I told her that I did, and she asked which shape I was going to pick. I half-jokingly asked her if she wanted to sit next to me while I made her card. She thought about it for a moment, but decided that she wanted the card to be a surprise. And then she told me that I could make pictures of the other shapes on the card.

It was very hard not to laugh.

But I have to say that this is one of the things that I love about Megan. She isn't afraid to be spell out exactly what it will take to make her happy. And there aren't any hidden catches.

I did make the card for her. I forgot to scan it, and now it seems that it was lost at afterschool. But it was in the shape of a heart and had a picture of a birthday cake with 6 and ½ candles as well as flowers and hearts and stars. She was delighted.

We returned from gymnastics, she made her own half birthday cake in her Easy Bake Oven (just as she did for her birthday). She served us cake and we sang "Happy Half-Birthday To You."

I can't believe that is has been 6½ years since she was born. It was this time 6 years ago that we were giving her her first taste of food. And now she is big enough to bake her own cake.
