Gavin @ 1 year

Gavin went in to see Dr. K for his one year well visit. He was also getting a fluid check on the ear infection he had back in April.

On the whole, he is doing great. He is 21lbs and 9oz, which puts him in the 31st percentile for weight. And 29.5" tall, which is the 41st percentile for height. Now that he is a year old, he also has the green light to eat any food we care to offer...although this pronouncement lacked a certain excitement, as we have been offering him table food for a while now.

There was some concern about the blood tests his doctor had ordered (the tests are standard for 1 year, they check for lead and iron levels). Gavin's hematocrit level was fine, but the platelet count and corpuscular volume were off. Dr. K said it could just be cause he has been sick so much recently, but asked us to try to make Gavin gets more iron in his diet.

And since she knows that Bryan and I are science geeks, we got a mini-lecture on red blood cells. I love our pediatrician.

As for his vaccinations, we skipped the Varicella and the MMR vaccines. Historically, my kids have reacted with a fever after those vaccines, and I would like to minimize the chances that I have to miss work because a child is sick. I'll take care of them when I get out for the summer.

Instead, today he got the new Prevnar vaccine, now with more flavor. But seriously, they added protection for 6 more strains of bateria. I think Riley will be getting it later this summer.

It was a good visit overall, and Gavin was a champ when he got poked. His good humor was helped by the fact that we let him have a lollipop (according to Dr. K, he is possibly one of her youngest patients to be lollipopped). I have completely caved on the issue.

When he got his blood drawn over the weekend (after three pokes, ouch) he saw Megan and Riley with lollipops and went bananas until he has one too. He loved it. Frankly, if I an going to let the nurse poke him is a needle to inject stinging stuff into his leg, the least I can do is give him a treat.
