Last week he declared that he had narrowed the selection to two, the Odyssey and the Sienna. And this afternoon we bit the bullet and drove out to the dealer to look at them in person and take a test drive.
It was less than a success.
Turns out that I really, really don't like minivans. It isn't a driving issue. We were able to test both the the Odyssey and the Sienna, and they drive fine. It is weird being so high off the ground. And a little too easy to speed through residential streets at more than 30 mph, but those are minor issues that more experience would solve.
I hate the layout. Even though a minivan has a seating capacity of 7, it is still designed for the needs of the typical two child family. The second row only has two seats. Which means that in our soon to be three child family someone would need to sit in the third row, alone.
In the first test drive, Megan sat in the third row, and I realized she might as well been on an island by herself. There was no way to reach her from the front seat; to deliver a snack or a reassuring hand when going up a steep hill or anything.
By the time we took the second minivan out, she refused to sit in the third seat. She wanted to sit closer to the front, with Riley. According to Megan, the new baby should sit back there. But I'm not prepared to exile the smallest and most vulnerable member of the family to the Siberia of the third row.
So know we are back to square one. Bryan has started the research process again to see what cars/vans/SUVs will allow for three across seating. And we are trying to figure out if there is a magical car seat arrangement that will allow us to keep our current cars.
Wish him luck. He is not particularly happy to be back at square one in the car search.
