Penicillin Allergy For Gavin

On Saturday afternoon I noticed that Gavin had a little bit of a rash on his thighs. Since he had had a diaper failure while we were at Roaring Camp, I attributed it to the extended wetness and didn't think anymore of it.

But on Sunday he was covered in what looked like hives. Luckily my brother, the-doctor-in-training, convinced me not to panic. If it wasn't bothering the baby, he said, I really didn't need to panic. And they weren't bothering the baby. Gavin was happily blotchy the whole day.
Monday morning, they were a bit more ... pronounced. And Bryan wisely vetoed the short sleeved shirt I had planned for Gavin in favor of something that would cover (hide) the rash. But the daycare teacher still insisted that we get a doctor's note. So off to the pediatrician I went. For the 4th time in three weeks.

I was expecting that she would say that the rash was nothing - just a viral reaction - but Dr. K. diagnosed a penicillin allergy (due to Gavin's recent course of antibiotics). Apparently while it is not common for the reaction to start at the end of a course, it does happen. And while the two things, amoxicillin and the rash, could be unrelated, it is safest to consider Gavin allergic.

When he is older, we can do some allergy testing to confirm (or refute.) So no more penicillin for Gavin.
