The howling

The night before last I was sitting, doing some work when I heard a weird howling noise outside. It happened a couple more times that night, but I chalked it up to some neighborhood kids, and went back to work.

Last night I heard the noise again, so I opened up the front door to see what was up, and was surprised to see what looked like a wolf walking across our front lawn.

A bit later there was a ruckus down the street - a police car, fire truck and ambulance, so Maura went to check it out. It turned out that the fire truck and ambulance were there because someone needed some help, but the police car was there because someone had called in a wolf sighting.

Later that evening we saw it again, crossing the intersection by our house. Despite my protesting, Maura called the police non-emergency hotline to report it (because the police officer had told her to do so). An officer came out to talk with us a bit, saying he'd keep an eye out.

Later still I saw it crossing our front steps. It got close enough that I could see it didn't have a collar. I suppose it could just be a big, grey, wolfy-looking dog. That isn't nearly as interesting, though.
