The Other Shoe

Riley is sick again with asthma.

Ever since we took him off his prevention meds and he started daycare I have been waiting for him to have an attack. But he had several colds throughout the winter with nary a wheeze. And now that it is spring in California, I was starting to relax.

But last night the asthma came back full-force. We were up with him half the night, pumping him full of albuterol. By 5 am, I gave up on sleeping and took Riley (who was an exhausted, coughing wreck) downstairs to watch TV. He rewarded my graciousness by throwing up all over me. At least the vomit succeeded in dispelling any notion that his father and I had that he would be able to go to daycare.

Our pediatrician was booked, but we were able to get Riley an appointment with Dr. M, the allergy/asthma specialist. Dr. M. listened to Riley breath and cautioned us that he might need to order a chest x-ray; apparently Dr. thought he heard crackling, a sign of pneumonia. But after a breathing treatment, Riley's lungs cleared up and we left with a script for an oral steroid and more inhaled treatments.

I'm not looking forward to Riley on steroids. He gets a little agressive on them. But I love how quickly they work on his breathing issues. He had one dose this afternoon and is doing so much better than he was just 12 hours ago.
