But we did get a copy of Megan's daily schedule. It a little more regimented than her kinder schedule, which makes sense. She does reading, writing, and math everyday. One big change from last year is that the afternoon is spent doing academics (Social Studies, Science, Health, Art), and there isn't a slot for free-play. All though there is a "cool down" time after lunch/recess.
We also found out that Megan's seat was moved. She is no longer sitting next to the little girl who gave her such a hard time over the Magic Rub easer. She now sits diagonally across from one of her favorite friends. I just hope that they don't get in trouble together.
And the big new of the night is that Megan will start getting homework. A packet will be send home every Monday and will be due on Friday. And she will be have spelling tests every Friday. I'm not looking forward to homework. Our evenings are crazy enough as it is. But at least the stakes aren't too high.
Mrs. M. made it clear that there were to be no tears over homework. And when we were done - for whatever reason - then it was fine to stop. The focus this year is not so much on using homework to master content, but to get the students into the routine of work outside of school and to take responsibility for that work. Our job as parents to to provide the space and the structure for the work to be done.
I have to say I am really missing Kindergarten. I'm not feeling quite ready for first grade.
