Parent/Teacher Conference (Riley)

I met with Riley's teacher, Miss M. this morning for a parent/teacher conference. Since he only started school 6 weeks ago, it was a fairly informal meeting.

We talked about Riley's speech. From she has seen in the classroom, she doesn't think that Riley has issues with hearing or auditory processing - just enunciation issues. But she wants us to keep her informed as the evaluation process goes on (and it will go on, now that I finally submitted the rest of the paperwork).

She also talked about Riley's interests in the classroom. He loves working with clay/play-do. Every morning that is the first job that he picks. And she said that he really likes art in general The other area he likes is the math jobs. He is very interested in the red and blue rods and puzzles. He really likes manipulating small objects.

I fond out that he is one of the best lunch eaters in the class. He always eat all of his lunch with out a fuss and is one of the first to finish. And when he is done, he gets his bedding ready for nap and picks out a book to look at while he waits for the rest of the class. I found out that, just like at home, he likes to look at the same book for 4 or 5 days.

His teacher clearly enjoys him. She told me that he has an excellent attention span for his age and a very soft personality. He gets along well with the others in the class and loves to help. He has been the classroom "chair helper" a couple of times now and takes his duties seriously.

I loved this chance to see Riley through someone else's eyes. I think too often he is over shadowed by his sister. I'm glad that he has a space all his own and a teacher that cares about him very much.
