Crime and Punishment

Megan broke Gavin's baby seat this evening. Yes, the seat that we pulled out from storage just three days ago. She was sitting in it and goofing around with it and managed to shear the the center pommel off.

I am so annoyed with her. Yes accidents happen, but I feel like that happen around Megan more than they ought too. These days she has such a selective memory for rules and admonishments. Or maybe it is just that she is over loaded. I feel like I spend more half the time we are together scolding her about her behavior. (The whining and the pouting are driving me bananas).

I sent her to her room, which turned out to be overkill. She was already quite upset (which I didn't notice, since I was too busy being upset myself) and being sent upstairs just made her feel sorry for herself. I went up to talk to her a few minutes later, when I was calm and her howling had subsided a bit.

I decided that she would need to write Gavin a note of apology and spend her own money to replace his baby seat. But that backfired on me too. I somehow thought that requiring that Megan spend her money would underline the seriousness of breaking something that belonged to her brother. But I obviously wasn't thinking clearly.

To begin with, Megan doesn't really understand money. She knows that it is important on some level, but doesn't really appreciate what is involved with earning and spending it. Plus she naturally wants to and enjoys spending the money she is given on other people. Whenever she gets money in the mail from her grandparents, she wants to take the whole family our for ice cream for buy a gift for Riley. Why would I want to taint that with punishment.

To say the least, Megan loved the idea of buying a new baby seat. Despite the fact that she can't keep her hands off of it, she doesn't like Gavin's BebePod. She wants him to have a fancier one, with a play tray. As soon as I mentioned it, she was eager to go shopping and started discussing colors with Riley. So as a punishment, it completely failed.

Bryan thinks he might be able to glue it back together. So we'll see how that goes. I don't actually know if I could clean out Megan's piggy bank to buy a new one.
