Do you want to know what the best part of first grade is? Not having to ask permission to use the bathroom. Seriously. That is all we could get out of Megan about her first day. Well, that and the fact that the girl who sits next to her doesn't think that Megan's plain pink eraser is worth having.
The day got off to a rocky start, mostly because there just isn't enough time in the morning. Last year it was hard enough to get them out the door in the morning, let alone leave extra time for picture. Megan is quite sulky in her first day of school picture, because I didn't want her to put on a jacket. My formerly temperature impervious child now gets chilly below 65°, which makes me a little sad. But was a such a stupid argument to have. I wish I could go back and just bite my tongue.
But it got better when we got to school. Megan and I had scouted out the classroom location last week when the class lists were posted. There weren't many kids from her kinder class with her, but there were several other names I recognized. Two neighbor children and her very favorite friend from her after-school program.
Dropping her off was crazy. We were given no information about what to do (other than her classroom and the start time of school) and after we watched the kids line up, there was this huddle of parents standing around, waiting .... for something. Eventually Bryan and I realized that there was nothing left for us to do, so we left and took the boys to daycare.
But she seems quite happy with her teacher and her new classmates. I hope this year is as wonderful as last year.
