Parent/Teacher Conference (Megan)

Today was Megan's fall parent-teacher conference.

Given the time constraints (we only had 20 minutes for the conference) and her teacher's tendency to run off on tangents, we didn't cover a whole lot of ground. But we did learn that Megan is doing great at reading.

She can read all of the first and second grade sight words and most of the third grade words. Mrs. M said that the fact that she could read them out of context (e.g from a list of a sheet rather organically in a story) was impressive.

Megan's writing is going well, although Mrs. M did have to put the kibosh on Megan's tendency to embellishing her letters with curlycues and other decorations. (They are fine for free-choice, but not spelling tests.) I did bring up Megan's still reverses the direction of letters and numbers. Mrs. M. said that it was still developmentally appropriate, but she would make a note and keep an eye on it.

We also got some clarification on the reading log portion of Megan's weekly home. I have been finding it a chore to fill out. It asks that you write down the title of the book and the number of minutes spend reading. That is just not how we think about reading in our household. And I thought it was giving Megan the wrong attitude about reading. (The other day when she was at loose ends and looking for an activity I suggested she read a book and she told me that she had already done her reading for the day.)

But we found out that we didn't have to be quite so meticulous in our record keeping. Mrs. M. said that the log is more for households that don't already have a daily habit of reading and we don't need to put every book down or track every minute. That was a relief.

We also got a copy of the California First Grade standards. Megan is going to be doing some interesting stuff this year.
