Speech Evaluation

Today I took Riley in for his speech evaluation. Even though he is only three, the evaluation is handled by the school district. So he want to Megan's school for the testing. He loved that he got to go to the big kids school.

The school nurse stopped by to do his hearing screen and vision test. Which mean I didn't have to take him back to the audiologist. He passed both, even though he still has some fluid in one ear. And the nurse made a point of telling me how wonderful and co-operative Riley was.

And then he went off with Mrs. W-W. for his speech evaluation. I had to stay behind. Mrs. W-W. explained that it can be hard to get kids to co-operated with the tests when parents were in the room.

After about 30 minutes I got called back to her office. Riley had made yet another conquest. Mrs. W-W. said it made her day to meet him and work with him. Why is it that he saves all of his good behavior and cuteness for strangers?

She told me that he had a very advanced vocabulary and sentence structure for his age and did very well asking and answering why questions. She agreed with me that his articulation was an issue. But warned me that he probably wouldn't qualify for services. She suspects that is merely a developments issue and will improve with time.

After she goes over the results and looks at the school nurses report, we have a formal meeting and she will write up Riley's IEP. That surprised me. I wasn't expecting that anything so formal.

I'm glad to have the evaluation part over. We'll find out what the next step is in a few weeks.
