Jeff, the kids, and I drove down to Monterey yesterday. We took the scenic route down, 17 to 1, so Jeff could see the mountains and then the coast while we were driving.
We skipped the aquarium this visit, although I highly recommend it if you ever find yourself in the area. Jeff took us onto the Navel Base, so he could do some business and I could shop in the NEX. If the Navy ever want to give up its day job, it could make a go out of the retail business. We also got to buy some very inexpensive gas.
Then we went to the wharf and Jeff treated up to a boat ride on a glass bottom boat. We were hoping to see a seal or a sea lion swimming underneath, but all we saw was kelp and jellyfish. But Megan and Riley were so excited about the jellyfish, that it was impossible to feel disappointed.
After than we walked over to the pier to get closer to the sea lions. The sea lions are my favorite part of Monterey. You can get so close to them, closer than in a zoo or aquarium, and they are in their natural environment so you don't have to feel guilty. Megan was trying to talk to them and sometimes they turned their heads in her directions, so she might have been a little successful.
At that point, it was getting late so we went to have dinner. We picked a restaurant at the end of the pier because it has huge windows and every table has a view. I'm pretty sure it was the same restaurant that Bryan and I ate at when we came out here in 2001. The sourdough bread was quite good.
And then it was time to PJ the kids and head home. We took 101 home; it is an easier drive and let jeff see more California scenery. We got in a little bit before 9.
Next up, Golden Gate park.
