The big news at the lake (at least according to me) is that Riley learned to swim yesterday! He is wearing the same orange and blue swim vest that Megan wore at his age.
It was amazing to watch happen. In the morning, when we he was still holding on to me and fairly cautious. He liked the extra flotation, but still wanted an adult body to hold on to. And then thought the afternoon he got more confident and then BAM!, he figured out how to keep his head out of the water and move around. At first, it was just a short distance between me and my mom, but the end of the day, he happily swam by himself all over the place.
The unfortunate part is that he learned this just before all of the relatives arrived, so they all failed to have the appropriate amount of awe and excitement at his accomplishment. I think it is amazing. And I'll have to check, but I think that Riley is one of the youngest in the clan to learning to swim.
The child who is garnering all the excitement and awe over her swimming is Megan. She has made such improvement since we have been here. She was able to swim at the end of last summer, but she lacked endurance. Now she can swim to the float by herself. She can swim beyond the float a bit too. She is so confident in the water now. Beyond the swimming, she is also jumping off the float, and then climbing back on to jump again. Her jumps tend toward belly flop, which are a bit painful to watch. My mom has been trying to teach her how to dive, but Megan seems to like falling belly first into the water.
They are having so much fun, it is a joy to watch.
