Today was a mixed bag of a birthday.
It started well enough, with homemade cards and a present from the kids. And there were well wishes from my mother and my father (and my father's cell phone - the cell phone called me three more times that morning and left a 5 minute message in honor of my birthday) and my siblings called too. Actually I think this was the first birthday in several years that both my brothers remembered.
But the day took a turn for the worse in the afternoon. Megan got very angry with me when I told her (for the 10th or 12th time) that we weren't going to a restaurant for dinner. And then (and this was apparently the kicker) I asked her to please stop asking me questions for a little while.
So Megan found the birthday card she made me and crossed out the all the kind words she has written inside (words like "you are my favorite mommy".) And then she gave the card back to me. On a different day I could have let that roll off my back, but today it broke my heart a little.
So Bryan came home to a big sobbing mess and whisked us off to Tomatina's for dinner. I am aware that we did somewhat reward Megan's unkind behavior, but not too much. Her idea of a good restaurant is Denny's. And because the kids were being crazy (and not actually eating the food that was ordered) no one got to have dessert.
We definitely are going to have a birthday do over for the next couple of days.

The nice think about birthdays is that they can go on for a while. If you remember we use to have never ending birthdays when you were little.
And your birthday changed my life for better -- a few ups and downs there as well.
Love you darling
