This was compounded by the fact that he and Maura were sitting behind the world's most easily annoyed person, who at everything above a whimper would turn around and give one of us the evil eye, before turning back and shaking his head. To be fair, during one of the more crazy periods, we did accidentally get water down his back, and Riley was kicking him from time to time, but even so he did seem a bit on the touchy side. Riley eventually fell asleep sometime around Wyoming, at which point we were all thoroughly frazzled. We'll definitely be buying him a seat of his own next time so we can strap him down.
As if that weren't enough, it turns out that before we left, Megan turned on the light above her car seat again. The battery was dead as a doornail. Fortunately, the parking place we used had a portable jumper kit, so at least we didn't have to wait for a tow truck.
Anyway, we're glad to be back home.
