Megan had her second soccer game today. After an inauspicious start - she spent the first quarter crying because she was hungry and wanted a snack - she managed to pull it together and did some great playing. Next week I need to make sure we have some bars in our soccer bag for such emergencies.
I took the video above by accident, but I happened to catch one of Megan's great stretches with the ball. And later in the game she came so close to making a goal. It was really exciting. When she gets past her distractions (her shadow, a dandelion, swishing her ponytails, etc), she is so good. It kills me that my father is on the other side of the country and can't be at these games.
On the way home I told her that if you scored a goal, you got to have a goal cake. And in typical Megan fashion she started asking a series of odd questions about goal cake. When she asked, "But how do you make the cake without any oven?" I realized that she though the cake appeared on the sidelines as soon as the goal was scored. She seemed a little disappointed when I told her that I would made the cake after we got home.

From your father, "Megan,a goal cake is a very special event, but we never get the cake until the game is over. After scoring a goal, the came has to continue, fast, intense, focused, fun and joyous, each team doing their best, doing the running and kicking and fun of the game. The memory of scoring a goal is permanent. That gets celebrated after the game with your family and friends that talk about this game and the anticipation of the next. From the time you were born you looked to me to be a very good athelete.
