I really like the pediatric dentist we found. The staff is kind and the office is well designed - bright yet calm colors, lots of toys and books, and interesting things to look at on the walls.
Riley went right for the toys and played happily while I went through his medical history and my concerns for his molars. Megan's molars were a mess by the time she went to the dentist, I really want to avoid a repeat of that experience.
For the actual exam, we did lap-to-lap. The dentist and I sat facing each other and I had Riley's back on my lap with his legs going up my chest. Riley's head was in the dentist's lap. Dr. K. quickly checked the jaw and other structures of the mouth and looked at Riley's teeth. He didn't get a cleaning yet, maybe next time.
Everything checks out. His teeth look good, no stains or visible cavities. There is minimal plaque. Riley does have a wee bit of crowding in his front teeth, but nothing to worry about. He is still growing and had 6 more teeth to come in. A lot can change in the next few months.
Our job is to keep brushing his teeth as much as possible and to try to cut out the night feedings. The hygienist suggested that I wipe Riley's teeth with a damp wash cloth after he nurses in the middle of the night, but I really don't want to stick my hand in his mouth in the dark. That would just be asking for trouble. Better to get serious about night-weaning him. Although we have been unsuccessful at that fun task for the last 4 months or so....
