Bryan had planned all sorts of party games and crafts (decorate your own crown, pin the antennae on the butterfly, musical statues, etc.) but we could barely get the kids to participate - they were having too much fun playing with the toys and running around the house. Eventually we gave up and let them run wild while we talked to the other adults.
For food, I made Megan's (and my) favorite party food, pigs-in-a-blanket. And we had pita chips and veggies with some onion dip, and a bowl of cut strawberries. I made my mom's party punch, which was a huge hit. Although I did discover that my punch bowl (a wedding gift, used for the first time ever today) is smaller than my mothers'.
Instead of cake, I used my rose cupcake pan to make mini-pound cakes. I dusted them with powdered sugar and whipped cream to top them. Although most of the kids declined the whipped cream in favor of gobs and gobs of ice cream. Here is a video of lighting and blowing out the candles:
The piñata was a hit, although I definitely went overboard filling it. For possibly the first time ever, small children left piñata goodies on the floor. Bryan and I were both glad that we got a pull-string piñata rather than the type that you whack with a stick. It actually took a very long time for them to find the string that opened the trap door; I think there were only four ribbons left when it finally opened.
The kids started to leave a little after 3. The party lasted just the right amount of time. The kids left while they were still having fun and I think Megan was done too.
(Update by Bryan): If you look really closely, you'll see the pale blue matches Maura is using say "It's a boy!". I think these are from when I was born! I suspect no one would have thought those would be used for my own daughter's birthday 33 years later...
