The celebration of a birthday at Montessori school is a lovely celebration. The birthday child carries a globe to represent Mother Earth and she walk around a calendar with a candle in the center, which represents one year. The child will walk around one time for year of her life. The other children all sing:
The Earth goes 'round the sunThe Earth goes 'round the sunThe Earth, The Earth, The Earth, The EarthThe Earth goes 'round the sun
After each year, the child is supposed to talk about what they did and could do that year. For the early years, the parent will fill in, if they are there. Here is a clip:*
You'll notice that several times, Megan just misses dragging her dress into the candle. The other thing to notice, which you may not be able to catch on the video, is how self conscious Megan is at being the center of attention. It is such an interesting quirk in her personality. Generally she loves the attention; Bryan and I had to watch a special ballet show this evening. But when the stakes are higher, like the school show or this birthday celebration, she really seems to want to crawl inside herself.
After the ceremony, the kids guzzled juice and ate the cupcakes we bought. When we left, they were bouncing off the walls.
*I meant to capture the whole ceremony, but my camera was acting up and kept cutting out after 30 seconds/
