The downsides of hoarding

I have an unfortunate habit of hoarding and saving consumables past their useful lifetime. For example, Kevin brought me some orange Fanta from abroad a couple years back, because I prefer it over the domestic kind. Of course, by definition this makes it hard to get, so my natural reaction was to save rather than drink it. I suppose the logic is that, I have this thing that I like and if I consume it I won't have it anymore, so I'll just squirrel it away somewhere for a rainy day. The flip side is that I don't really get to enjoy it either, because the days are never rainy enough. (Now that I think about it, this is how I deal with my bank account, too.) In this particular case, I didn't get around to opening the Fanta until more than a year after I received it. At this point it tasted rather less like what it ought to, and rather more like flat grapefruit soda.

I ran into this issue again last night when I went to eat a candy bar I had stuck away I don't remember how long ago. When I opened it, I was surprised when some powder fell out. It soon became clear that about half the bar had apparently reverted to some simpler form that closely resembled hot chocolate mix. The rest had this unpleasant looking white patina that suggested it was heading south, too. Whoops. There was a small corner that was still edible, however.

Speaking of squirreling, here's a squirrel.
