Megan's first soccer game was actually a short scrimmage followed by a clinic. I think it would have been better if the clinic had come first. During the "game" it became quite apparent that Megan had no idea what she supposed to do.
If we shouted from the sidelines for her to go after the ball, she would chase the ball. Otherwise she just hung out on the field and chatted with one of the boys on her team. And then, a couple of times she tried to walk off the field because she wanted a snack or a rest. Bryan and I realized that we had never explained to her what it means to play on a team.
If she lived in a more typical household, Megan would have been watching sports on TV. And she might have absorbed the rules of team play subconsciously. But we all know that is not the case in our house.
I'm planning to spend some time this week explaining the our expectations for her while playing soccer. And we are going do do some running drills so she can get sense of what a 10 minute quarter will feel like.

Talking about expectations makes a lot of sense. Funny how we think that we're all on the same page! Even when the person in question is not even 5!
You probably need to think about the comments her teacher made and think about translating those into expectations too.
