Riley is still feverish and sick. The vomiting stopped last night, replaced with diarrhea late this afternoon. And throughout, Riley has been so listless it has been rather alarming. Don't worry, he isn't lethargic. It is just completely out of character for Riley to act as though he is sick. His normal behavior when sick is to act normal, but have a high fever or be unable to breath. Even with a temp of 102F or O2 sats in the low 90s, he runs around like the curious boy that he is.
I spent most of the day holding him while he dozed. He had very little interest in drinking or eating, but I got him to nurse a bit and drink a few sips of Pedialyte. But the end of the day he had perked up a little, which was good, since we had to take Megan to her first swimming lesson at the Y. Such is the lot of a second child.
Megan had great first lesson, by the way. I had signed her up for the Pike/Eel level but the instructor re-slotted her as a Ray. She is as pleased as punch that she got moved up a level. Plus she liked her teacher, a very nice teenage boy named J. This time I made sure to talk to her teacher right away about the need to be firm and consistent with Megan in the water. I can do without another drowning incident.
Riley was fussy, but managed to hold it together for the duration of the lesson. Plan A had been to take him to the Child Watch, but since he was sick he had to hang out in the hall way with me. Which wasn't as bad as it normally would have been, since in his enervated state, he was content to sit on my lap.
But when we got home, he started to do poorly again. Which was unfortunate. Megan had her end of semester gymnastics show this evening and we were expecting to attended as a family. Even with Riley under the weather, we were trying to convince ourselves that we could still all go. And then the diarrhea started.
I'm hard pressed to say which is worse. In a child still in diapers, diarrhea is generally contained, unlike vomit. But the smell, my god the smell. I think it is a draw.
So Bryan stayed home with Riley and I took our collection of cameras to document the event as best I could. I'll try to get the video up later in the week.
Right now, I'm glad that the kids are in bed and the day is almost over. I hope that tomorrow will be an easier day.
