Strep III

I called the our pediatrician today because Riley's infected finger wasn't getting any better. We have been following the home care instructions from Urgent Care (although getting him to keep a bandage on has been impossible) but now 3+ days later it seemed to be getting worse. The red, irritated area was reaching almost to his first knuckle and there still seemed to be pus under the skin.

Dr. K. made a spot for us late in the afternoon and I left work early, picked up the kids from daycare and raced over. She looked at it a bit and managed to squeeze out a bit of pus to culture. She didn't think it is MRSA, but we both agreed that it made sense to get a culture done. And told us that she wanted to start him on oral antibiotics.

And all along we were chatting. We haven't seen Dr. K. in months. She didn't even know I was pregnant (and she promised to do what she could to spring the new baby from the hospital as soon as possible) because the kids had been so healthy. I mentioned that Megan had has strep a couple of weeks ago, so just for kicks, Dr. K. took at look at Riley's throat and did a swab. I didn't think anything would come of it, because he never complained that his throat hurt, but turn out he has strep. And an infected finger.

Dr. K. prescribed cephalexin, to cover the strep in his throat and whatever is growing in his finger. Depending on what the finger culture says, we may have to change antibiotics.

I picked up new tooth brushes for the kids and tomorrow I am washing all of their bedding in hot, hot water.
